MADERA, CA (April 26, 2019) – Two people lost their lives Thursday when a small airplane crashed near Avenue 17 and Road 23.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what led the ultralight SRO Stingsport type plane to crash in a Madera County field.

According to reports, the incident was reported by the California Highway Patrol around 1 p.m. Two people died at the scene. The Madera County Sheriff’s identified them as Joe Kulbeth, 76, and Saverio Chimienti Jr., 28.

Both victims are believed to be Fresno residents.

Following the accident, Cruz contacted the Fresno County Sheriff’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team to assist. However, a sheriff’s spokesman stated there was no indication of explosives from the crash.

At the scene, the team handled a sensitive matter, dealing with the aircraft’s construction. Per the Madera Sheriff’s Office, the bomb squad’s presence demanded the disarming of safety equipment on board the plane.
