Semi-Truck Drivers Cited in I-90 Vehicle Crash

Kittitas County, CA (October 18, 2023) – Troopers Jeffrey Wood, 33, of Kennewick, and Luis Silva, 32, of Yakima, were injured in an Interstate 90 collision Sunday night.

WSP officers said the multi-vehicle collision occurred at around 9:45 p.m. four miles west of Cle Elum.

According to the authorities, a big rig driver lost control of the vehicle that went off the roadway.

Then at around 1:15 a.m., another big rig struck a parked Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT) truck that was responding to the initial collision.

This resulted in a chain reaction and the DOT rear-ended a WSP cruiser parked in front of it.

According to WSP Trooper Jeremy Weber, “The DOT truck was not occupied at the time of the collision, however, one of our troopers was inside the patrol vehicle when it was hit by the DOT truck. So he was transported along with another trooper who was on the scene investigating who moved out of the way and got tangled up in some barbed wire.”

Troopers Wood and Silva, along with the driver of the second big rig, 75-year-old Lazaro Renteria of El Paso, Texas, were all transported to Kittitas Valley Healthcare with minor injuries.

The driver of the second big rig, 43-year-old Anatoli Shramovych of Puyallup also sustained minor injuries and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Officers said Shramovych and Renteria were cited for distracted driving that resulted in the collisions.

Prevent Vehicle Collisions

Yield right of way. It is important to understand the right of way. Be sure to yield to drivers who have the right of way. However, it is safe to never assume that all drivers know the rules. Only proceed when it is safe to do so.

Most importantly, let us also be mindful to never drink and drive.

Indeed, driving is essential for many in order to move about in their lives. It is one of the most dangerous activities we do daily. Consequently, as common as they are, many people do not suspect what follows in the event of a vehicle accident like the Interstate 90 collision.

Furthermore, according to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), there are approximately 300,000 merging accidents every year.

Additionally, it is crucial to remain calm to properly handle the immediate aftermath of a traffic accident.
