Jaycee Alameda Hurt in Sonora Motorcycle Accident on Highway 108

SONORA, CA (June 26, 2019) – A 26-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in a collision on Highway 108 on June 22.

Motorcyclist Jacyee Eddie Alameda of Manteca collided with a Sonora Police Department patrol vehicle just west of Highway 108. The incident happened at the intersection with South Washington Street as the patrol car tried to make a U-turn on the highway to respond to a call for service.

“At this time it’s unknown if there will be any further information to determine culpability on either parties involved,” CHP Public Information Officer Steven Machado said.

Sonora Police Officer Thomas Brickley drove the patrol vehicle during the incident.

Alameda rode a westbound 2008 Honda motorcycle at an unknown speed on Highway 108, west of the intersection with South Washington Street. The rider approached a location where Brickley had been assisting another Sonora Police Officer with a traffic stop.

A CHP press release revealed that Brickley parked on the right shoulder of westbound Highway 108 with his rear amber warning lights on before the incident happened. Brickley activated the patrol vehicle’s blue and red emergency lights when he responded.

When Brickley tried to make the U-turn into the eastbound lane of Highway 108, Alameda couldn’t avoid a crash. The rider struck the left side of the patrol vehicle.

As a result, Jaycee Alameda sustained major head trauma and is in serious condition on Monday. Responders airlifted him to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. Brickley suffered minor injuries in the crash.

“Our officer suffered minor injuries and is home recovering from the physical and emotional effects from the incident as well,” the Sonora Police press release said.

Authorities are still looking into the speeds of the vehicles when the crash happened. They are also investigating about the distance between the vehicles when Brickley activated his emergency lights and made a U-turn. “There was evidence collected at the scene that’s being sorted through exactly how and why this happened,” Machado stated.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office logs revealed that at 12:28 a.m., a caller reported that a vehicle drove outside of her apartment on Hospital Road in Sonora that did not belong there and the driver was asleep. The Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at 12:31 a.m. for an ambulance call.

Machado clarified that a U-turn at that location over the double-yellow dividing line between the westbound and eastbound lanes is not an illegal maneuver for any driver — civilian or law enforcement. “As long as a turning movement does not affect traffic. In addition, if it can be done safely, then the U-turn can be made,” Machado added. “However, I would strongly encourage moving farther westbound to make that U-turn.”

However, Machado revealed that passing over the double-yellow lines to pass vehicles moving in the same direction as the vehicle doing the pass is illegal. It’s unknown whether alcohol played a role in the crash. “We investigate the collision the same as it would be with any other collision,” Machado said.
