1 Hospitalized after Avenal Car Accident

AVENAL, CA (March 22, 2019) – A 40-year-old male driver sustained serious injuries in a car collision around 5:30 a.m. on March 20.
The incident occurred on Highway 198, east of Avenal. Upon the officers’ arrival, they found out that a stolen 2004 Dodge Durango driven by an unknown driver crossed over into oncoming lanes.
Meanwhile, Javier Rodriguez Gaytan was driving his 2005 Toyota westbound when the driver crashed into the right side of his vehicle. The other car rolled over and landed on its right side in a dirt field. Medical responders flew Gaytan to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with major injuries.
The CHP reported that the driver of the Dodge immediately fled the scene on foot after the collision. An extensive search of the area was conducted which yielded negative results.
It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
