Kelli Zanon, Jared Russell Dead after Crashing Stolen Car into Big Rig During Police Chase
SUTTER, CA (August 1, 2019) – A man and a woman died after crashing a stolen car into a big rig during a police chase Thursday morning in Sutter, officials said.
The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. on eastbound Highway 20 near West Butte Road. A 21-year-old Jared Andrew Russell drove a stolen Honda away from the Colusa city limit when an off-duty CHP officer spotted the car and alerted the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office and Colusa police, who were soon trailing the car near Highway 45.
Russell started speeding at more than 100 mph when he realized he was being chased, according to the CHP. He eventually tried to pass other cars on the Sutter Bypass bridge and moved into a lane of oncoming traffic, where he crashed head-on with the big rig.
Russell was transported to Rideout Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His passenger, a 25-year-old Kelli Christine Zanon, was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where she also died.
The driver of the big rig was not injured.
Both Russell and Zanon were Yuba City residents.
Further investigation of this tragic crash is underway.
