Elderly Man Dies after Struck by Vehicle at 177th and Northern Avenues
WADDELL, AZ (Januar 5, 2020) – An elderly man died in a bicycle crash Sunday afternoon at an intersection in Waddell.
The fatal crash happened just before 1:00 p.m. at 177th Avenue and Northern Avenue.
Authorities said an 86-year-old James Thelen was riding his bike north of 177th Avenue when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the Northern Avenue intersection. A vehicle then struck him.
Paramedics rushed Thelen to a nearby hospital, where he died a short time later.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Thelen remained on the scene.
The Sheriff’s office said speed or impairment do not seem to be a factor in this accident. No charges are pending at this time. Further investigation is underway.
