James Sandall of Yakima Dead in SR 24 Vehicle Collision [Mattawa, WA]

Mattawa, WA (May 10, 2025) – 68-year-old James Sandall of Yakima was killed in a SR 24 vehicle collision before Friday noon.

It was around 11:03 a.m. on May 9 when the fatal collision happened near the Vernita Rest Area, approximately 14 miles south of Mattawa.

Investigators said a 2018 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Sandall exited the rest area and attempted to turn left to drive east on the freeway when it was hit by a westbound 1989 GMC pickup.

The emergency rescuers rushed James Sandall to Kadlec Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Sandall’s passenger, 62-year-old Carrie Greenough, also of Yakima, was transported with injuries. Both of them wearing seatbelts.

Moreover, the GMC driver, 66-year-old Rhonda Procell of Bovill, Idaho, was also rushed to Kadlec with injuries. Her passenger, 65-year-old Robin Taylor of Rochester, Washington, was not hurt in the collision. Officers said they were wearing seatbelts.

In the meantime, the authorities are investigating the cause of the collision and do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors.

Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the crash scene.
