Car Crashes into Tree in Antioch Killing its 17-Year-Old Driver and 13-year-Old Passenger

ANTIOCH, CA (January 11, 2019) – Two teenagers were killed following a car accident Friday evening in Antioch, police said.

The fatal crash happened around 7:00 p.m. near the intersection of Lone Tree Way and Indian Hill Drive.

According to reports, an unknown vehicle carrying six people lost control and crashed into a tree. Officers arrived and located the vehicle with extensive damage on the south sidewalk of Lone Tree Way.

One of the car’s occupant was ejected. Five others were trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by Contra Costa County firefighters.

The 17-year-old female driver and a female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was later identified as a 13-year-old Jaia Lightner. She was an eight-grader at Delta Vista Middle School and an avid soccer player.

The other four passengers, another 13-year-old girl, two 17-year-old girls and 16-year-old boy, were taken to trauma centers with moderate to life-threatening injuries.

The teens had just left a basketball game at Deer Valley High School, less than a mile down Lone Tree Way from where they crashed.

Antioch police believe speed and wet conditions were factors in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
