1 Dead in San Diego Car Accident
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 11, 2020) – A male resident of La Mesa died in a car accident on the 5 Freeway near San Diego’s Mission Bay area on March 7.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the man overturned his car into an embankment before he struck a tree.
The authorities have identified the man as Jacob Eugene Arnell. CHP Public Information Officer Salvador Castro revealed that the fatal accident occurred just after 9:00 a.m. along northbound 5 Freeway near SeaWorld Drive.
Reports also stated that he was the sole occupant of the white GMC Escalade.
Witnesses also said that Jacob Eugene Arnell drove at a high speed and attempted to drive past other motorists just before the collision.
“That caused him to veer off the roadway, overturning and colliding with a tree,” Castro added.
As a result, the Escalade went down an embankment, overturned, and crashed into a tree. Some parts of the vehicle and debris could be seen scattered throughout the crash scene. The authorities also found a baby stroller, a backpack, and other items that had been ejected from the Escalade.
The incident was a single-vehicle crash.
The Aftermath
Meanwhile, the authorities closed traffic for multiple hours during the investigation across two lanes of the 5 Freeway north of SeaWorld Drive. The authorities also dispatched a tow truck to recover the vehicle from the embankment.
The collision is still under active investigation. It’s also unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
We’re extending our sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Jacob Eugene Arnell during this difficult time.
