22-Year-Old Cal Poly Student Fatally Injured in Accident with Big Rig at Cholame Y Intersection
KERN COUNTY, CA (April 30, 2018) – Last Monday, a fatal and fiery crash took place on Highway 41, just one mile south of the Kern County line.
The deceased victim was identified as 22-year-old Iriana Pina of Kettleman City, a junior transfer student at Cal Poly.
According to CHP reports, Pina was driving her 2007 Ford Mustang northbound on Highway 41, near the Cholame Y Intersection. For unknown reasons, she crossed the double yellow lines into the southbound lanes, where she struck a big rig hauling a trailer.
The truck, driven by Fillimon R Lopez of Corona, struck the side of the Ford, jack-knifed, and caught on fire. The flames spread to nearby vegetation, which caused over 1.5 acres to be burned in the area. Pina sustained fatal injuries, while Lopez was reportedly uninjured in the collision.

Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Iriana Pina. She was known for her bright smile and hard-working demeanor. Pina was a junior at Cal Poly, and was studying civil and environmental engineering. May she rest in peace.
