1-Month-Old Girl Fatally Injured after Car Crashes into Pole near South Hillborn Avenue
WEST COVINA, CA (July 19, 2018) – Early Thursday morning, an infant was killed and a woman was injured, following a solo-vehicle crash on East Cortez Street. The identities of the people involved were not immediately disclosed by officials.
According to the West Covina Police Department, the crash took place around 5:16 AM in the 2100 block of East Cortez Street, near South Hillborn Avenue.
Authorities who arrived at the scene found a car damaged after slamming into a pole. Inside the vehicle, they found a 1-month-old girl injured and unresponsive in the front passenger seat. The infant was reportedly unrestrained in a child safety seat.
The baby was rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead by the medical staff. Her mother, a 32-year-old woman from Covina, was also hospitalized after sustaining minor injuries. There is no update on her current medical condition.
It is unclear if drugs and alcohol were contributing factors in the tragic accident, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the events leading to the deadly crash. The case will also be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in the near future.
