91-Year-Old Man Dies, 8 Others Including 5 Children Hurt in Long Beach Crash

LONG BEACH, CA (June 27, 2019) – A man was killed and eight other people, including five children, sustained injuries in a crash Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 10:10 a.m. on Long Beach Boulevard, just south of 44th Street.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, a 90-year-old woman drove a 2015 Kia Rio. However, she failed to yield to oncoming traffic while exiting a driveway in the 4300 block of Long Beach Boulevard.

A 2010 Dodge Challenger then struck the Kia. A 27-year-old Long Beach woman carrying six passengers drove the Challenger. The car held five children at the time of the accident. In addition, the minors were unrestrained in the back seat.

Paramedics took a total of nine patients to hospitals for treatment.

Sadly, the passenger in the Kia did not survive and was declared dead. He was later identified as Howard Schaak, 91, of Los Alamitos.

The conditions of the injured drivers and passengers were not immediately available.

Further investigation of this fatal crash is underway.
