William John Mandril Arrested after Fatal Pedestrian Crash near Foothill Boulevard
OROVILLE, CA (October 10, 2018) – A woman was killed Wednesday evening following a DUI crash on Lower Wyandotte Road. The victim was later identified as 20-year-old Hillary Christine Wilhite, a resident of Oroville.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 9:20 PM near Foothill Boulevard. A 2001 Lexus, driven by 33-year-old Jessana Carmona of Oroville, became disabled due to engine problems on Lower Wyandotte Road. Three women – 21-year-old Wheynema Sutfin, 19-year-old Alyssa Marie Gramps, and Wilhite – stopped to help the stranded driver.
A short time later, an eastbound truck failed to negotiate the right-hand curve in the roadway and struck the Good Samaritans. Sutfin and Gramps were transported to Enloe Hospital with major injuries, while Carmona was unharmed in the crash. Updates on their current medical conditions were not immediately available.
Meanwhile, Wilhite was rushed to the Oroville Medical Center with multiple serious injuries, where she was later pronounced dead. A GoFundMe page was created by Carmona’s sister to assist Wilhite’s family with funeral expenses. Click on the link to donate and to support the campaign.
The truck driver, identified as 63-year-old William John Mandril of Bangor, was arrested for vehicular manslaughter while under the influence of drugs and reckless driving with three counts of great bodily injury. He is currently being held at the Butte County Jail with a bail set at $240,000.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and to identify other possible contributing factors. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
