Heriberto Cantu of Rio Grande Killed in Highway 86 Collision [Swisher County, TX]

Swisher County, TX (August 24, 2023) – On Wednesday, four people were injured and 35-year-old Heriberto Cantu of Rio Grande was killed in a Highway 86 collision.

It was about 5:40 p.m., when a westbound 2012 Ford F250 with three passengers was towing a trailer on Highway 86, approximately 12 miles west of Tulia,

At the same, Heriberto Cantu was driving a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Silverado on FM 2301. He was the only occupant inside the truck.

Officers said the Silverado was approaching a stop sign at the intersection and TxDPS said there is no stop sign for traffic on Highway 86.

Apparently, Cantu disregarded the stop sign and struck the Ford on the driver’s side. The Ford and the trailer left the roadway while the Silverado did not overturn.

Cantu was thrown from the truck and died at the scene. Officers said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Moreover, the Ford driver and a passenger were treated for minor injuries while the two other passengers were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

TxDPS is investigating the collision.
