1 Hurt and 1 Arrested after Redding Car Crash on Market Street

REDDING, CA (March 17, 2020) – On March 15, a 23-year-old woman sustained injuries in a car crash on Market Street.

According to Redding Police, 20-year-old Hanna McCuan of Redding was texting while driving. Her distracted driving led to a crash near the Dutch Bros on North Market Street.

The incident occurred at 11:24 a.m., on North Market and Arboretum Drive.

According to the police, MacCuan was driving a 2010 Dodge sedan north on North Market St. while using her cell phone. She failed to notice the red light when she struck 23-year-old Hannah Smith of Shasta Lake who was driving a 2016 Kia sedan. Smith was initiating an eastbound turn from southbound North Market St. onto Arboretum Drive at the time.

McCuan tried to prevent the crash by veering. However, she failed and drove onto the east curb. She then struck a Redding Electric Utility power pole.

Medics took Smith to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, as well as evaluation. Both drivers reportedly wore their seatbelts during the crash. McCuan admitted that she was using her phone while driving.

Authorities ruled out drugs and alcohol as a factor in the crash which remains under investigation. The Redding Police Traffic Unit is reviewing the incident for possible charges.

This incident is a gentle reminder for drivers to stay focused and avoid dangerous distractions that can cause serious accidents.
