Big Rig Catches Fire after Crashing SUV on 5 Freeway in Gustine, One Fatality Reported
GUSTINE, CA (November 20, 2018) – One person was killed following a big rig crash late Tuesday evening in Merced County near Gustine.
The fatal crash happened around 10:09 p.m. on northbound 5 Freeway near Highway 140 and Sullivan Road off-ramp.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the big rig crashed into a Chevrolet Suburban with a U-Haul trailer. The big rig caught fire after the crash and caused a traffic delay.
One of the drivers suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim was not immediately available.
The first and second lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours while officers and crews worked on the scene.
Details surrounding the collision were not made clear in the reports and media releases. The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
