70-Year-Old Man Killed in Amtrak Train Collision near Railroad Avenue
UNION CITY, CA (May 2, 2018) – On Wednesday morning, a 70-year-old-man was struck and killed by a train along H Street. He was later identified by the Alameda County Sherrif’s Office as Guadencio Martinez of Union City.
According to the police, the deadly collision happened at around 8:44 AM. Martinez was crossing the railroad tracks at H Street near Railroad Avenue while pulling a cart of groceries behind him. A witness stated that the railroad crossing arms were already down as the warning bells alerted everyone that a train was on its way. Despite these warning signals, the elderly man continued to cross the tracks.
Martinez was almost out of the train tracks when an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train from Sacramento going to San Jose struck his grocery cart. It is also a possibility that the train made contact with him, resulting in numerous critical injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead shortly after.
The 112 passengers and 4 crew members on board the train were reportedly uninjured.
Affected areas were shut down temporarily for investigation and later reopened to traffic. The incident is being investigated by both the Union City Police and the Amtrak Police. In a news release, they stated that Martinez’s death is being considered a traffic related accident instead of an intentional act.
