Two Cars Collide in Nipton, Killing 9-Year-Old Girl

NIPTON, CA (April 3, 2019) – A 9-year-old girl died in Monday’s two-vehicle accident on the 15 Freeway near Halloran Summit Road.

The 2:38 p.m. crash occurred on the 15 North Freeway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 35-year-old male from Corona operating a white BMW x5 was traveling at speeds of about 70 mph. Reports say his speed exceeds the posted speed limit. Ahead of him in the No. 1 lane, a 51-year–old Mission Viejo man in a silver Honda Odyssey attempted to switch to the No. 2 lane to allow the BMW to pass him.

However, the BMW mirrored the Honda driver’s maneuver into the No. 2 lane. Due to his speed, the BMW driver was unable to avoid striking the Honda’s rear.

The collision caused both drivers to lose control. While the Honda traveled across the asphalt shoulder and overturn into the open desert, the BMW struck a road sign and overturned on its right side.

Tragically, a 9-year-old girl in the rear passenger seat of the BMW suffered fatal injuries. The BMW driver and two additional passengers suffered moderate to major injuries. Following the crash, paramedics airlifted them to University Medical Center, Las Vegas for treatment.

The Honda occupants sustained minor to moderate injuries and sought treatment at UMCLV.

Per the CHP, alcohol is not a factor, but an ongoing investigation continues.
