Gilroy Man Dies, Martin Diaz Barajas Jr Injured in Rear-End Crash on Interstate 5 [Patterson, CA]

Patterson, CA (October 24, 2021) – On Saturday, 54-year-old Gilroy man dies, and 30-year-old Martin Diaz Barajas Jr. of Sacramento suffered injuries in Interstate 5 rear-end crash.

Officers received the crash report at about 9:43 p.m. about an overturned vehicle on the southbound side of the freeway. 

Minutes later, officers got a report about a vehicle with front-end damage with an unresponsive occupant.

Officers said the rescuers found the Gilroy man, who was driving a 1983 Jeep, on the west shoulder near the vehicle. 

He was thrown from his vehicle during the accident and lost his life at the scene. 

The preliminary investigators said the Jeep driver was southbound in the right lane.

At the same time, Barajas Jr. was also in the right lane.

However, the right front of his 2018 Ford rear-ended the Jeep.

As a result, the Jeep went onto the west shoulder and overturned. Barajas lost control of his vehicle as it went into the center divider. 

His vehicle overturned several times before hitting a high-tension cable barrier and finally stopped. 

Immediately, rescuers took Barajas by air ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. 

Meanwhile, officers said that Barajas was wearing his safety restraint when the crash happened. 

Officers are still investigating the crash.
