Officers Searching for Suspect Driver in I-215 Fatal Crash
Riverside, CA (Aug, 8, 2023) – On Monday, 38-year-old Gilberto Sotelo was killed following an Interstate 215 hit-and-run collision.
The fatal collision happened at about 1:45 a.m. on the southbound freeway, north of La Cadena Drive.
Sotelo’s Chevrolet Silverado became disabled after running out of fuel so he pulled to the freeway shoulder. The authorities said it was not determined if he obtained a gas can from his vehicle, or walked to a service station and filled up a container, and returned to his Chevy.
However, as Sotelo began pouring gas into the vehicle, a Honda SUV or pickup driven southbound in the slow lane at an unknown speed veered toward Sotelo, striking him and his vehicle.
The Honda driver fled the scene driving south on I-215.
Riverside Fire Department paramedics immediately responded to the scene and declared Sotelo dead.
CHP troopers looked for the hit-and-run driver, but couldn’t locate the suspect driver.
Later on, the authorities found broken parts belonging to the involved Honda SUV or truck. Officers said the Honda will have right side damage.
In the meantime, the authorities encourages anyone with information to contact the CHP’s Riverside office at 951-637-8000.
