77-Year-Old Man Critically Injured after Crashing into Car on Huasna Road and Big Canyon Court
ARROYO GRANDE, CA (February 21, 2018) – A 77-year-old cyclist sustained critical injuries after crashing into a car around 3 PM on Wednesday afternoon.
According to California Highway Patrol, Fred Lauriente of Arroyo Grande was riding his bicycle in the bike lane on westbound Huasna Road, east of Big Canyon Court. At the same time, 69-year-old William Tripp of Grover Beach was driving a 2004 Honda Accord in the westbound lane of Huasna Road, approaching Lauriente.
As the Honda passed the bicycle, Lauriente maneuvered his bike to the left and struck the right side of the Honda. Due to the impact of the crash, the bicycle fell on its right side and landed in the center of the westbound lane of Huasna Road, with Lauriente still on the bicycle.
Tripp parked on the right shoulder of the road and remained at the scene until CHP arrived. Officers found that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Emergency responders rush Lauriente in critical condition to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
Authorities are still investigating the incident.
