Teens Hurt after Bounce House Went Airborne and Flipped Over
ZILLAH, WA (May 5, 2019) – Five students were hurt when a strong wind flipped over a bounce house in a Washington school on Wednesday, May 1.
Officials at Zillah High School, near Yakima, stated that five students sustained injuries when the inflatable play area on the football field went airborne during an outdoor event. The wind lifted it for about 20 feet off the ground and carried it for more than 240 feet.
The school did not specify the injuries. However, local authorities reported that one victim was in critical condition and had to be airlifted from the area. The students were tethered into the inflatable at the time.
Witnesses stated that the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. during an Associated Student Body event on the school’s football field. A video captured dirt swirling up near the field and people running toward the bounce house.
Zillah High School sophomore Christopher Molina told local reporters that one victim appeared to have a concussion. Molina said that the bouncy house went up pretty high in the air. After that, it came down and then it hit the cement. A girl got a concussion and two other girls broke their legs because of the incident, he added.
Zillah High School said that they are investigating the incident.
