Woman Hurt in Pasadena Police Chase Crash; Fernando Frenes Arrested

PASADENA, CA (April 8, 2019) – A woman suffered serious injuries after a televised pursuit crash in a Pasadena intersection on Thursday, April 4.

The 53-year-old woman traveling eastbound tried to cross Orange Grove Boulevard on West Holly Street. However, the suspect’s white utility truck collided into her car’s driver-side front door at 5:18 p.m.

The suspect’s truck was traveling at approximately 53 miles per hour when it slammed with victim’s Toyota RAV-4 SUV.

A California Highway Patrol unit chased him at the time of the incident. Law enforcement and television helicopter watched the suspect through the pursuit.

Both Pasadena firefighters and police arrived at the scene almost immediately after the crash.

They immediately took the suspect into custody at gunpoint. He sustained minor injuries. Authorities later identified him as 51-year-old Fernando Octavio Frenes, of Montebello.

It took firefighters around 20 minutes to remove the victim from her vehicle’s wreckage. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The pursuit started in Bell Gardens just before Los Angeles television stations began coverage at about 4:35 p.m.

The suspect was only originally wanted for reckless driving. He drove at high speeds for about an hour through rush hour traffic on the 110, 134 and 210 freeways. He continued along congested surface streets in Alhambra, South Pasadena and finally Pasadena.

Officers charged Frenes with grand theft auto and felony hit-and-run. They also charged him with violation of probation, evading a police officer and causing serious bodily injury.

Speeding, reckless driving, and fleeing from police all contribute to reckless road collisions. Avoid all at all costs. We can all do our part to harbor safer roadways by driving safely and responsibly. Never assume all drivers are safe.
