Ernest Hardaway Sr. Identified in Fatal 2-Vehicle Collision in Murrieta

MURRIETA, CA (December 22, 2018) — An 80-year-old man was killed, and two people were injured, in a Wednesday afternoon crash on 15 Freeway in Murrieta.

Reports from the California Highway Patrol said the incident occurred just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday on southbound 15 Freeway, south of Murrieta Hot Springs Road.

80-year-old Ernest Hardaway Sr. of Temecula was driving a 1999 Lincoln Town Car in the No. 3 lane of the southbound side of the freeway, traveling about 65 miles per hour, when a 2003 Dodge Ram van abruptly slowed as traffic ahead of it came to a stop.

Hardaway applied his brakes but lost control and spun out. The driver’s side of the Lincoln crashed into the rear of the Dodge, which caused the Town Car to drift into the center median. The van was pushed onto the shoulder of the freeway.

Medics pronounced Hardaway dead at the scene. The 61-year-old man driving the van and his 58-year-old female passenger, who are both from Downey, were taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment of minor injuries.

The collision is under investigation.
