23-Year-Old Arrested, Female Killed in Collision on Canal Avenue in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA (April 14, 2020) – Late Saturday afternoon, 23-year-old Eric Munson of Long Beach, was arrested after a fatal car accident on Canal Avenue.

Officers received reports around 4:40 p.m., just south of Esther Street. Dispatchers arrived to the area shortly after.

Munson was traveling north in a 2003 Nissan Altima when he suddenly struck a Tercel. The collision consequently forced the Tercel to slam into a parked semi-truck’s rear.

Authorities say a 56-year-old female of Rancho Dominguez was also an occupant inside the Tercel. Due to the impact of the collision, she was later pronounced dead. However, her identity has not been given due to pending family notification.

As Munson tried to escape on foot, authorities stopped and arrested him. He was then booked in the Long Beach City jail on suspicion of DUI.

Moreover, the surrounding area on Canal Avenue was closed off for a brief time during cleanup and preliminary duties. However, the roadway has since reopened.

At this time, an investigation to determine further details remains ongoing.

Once available, more details will be given.
