Zaon Collins Accidentally Struck and Killed Eric Echevarria in DUI Crash on South Fort Apache Road
Las Vegas, NV (January 1, 2021) – On Wednesday, 19-year-old Zaon Collins accidentally killed the 52-year-old Eric Echevarria of Las Vegas in a DUI crash on South Fort Apache Road.
Authorities responded to the crash scene at about 3:23 p.m. Furnace Gulch Avenue past Blue Diamond Road.
The Metropolitan Police Department said the incident involved a 2016 Dodge Challenger driven by Collins and Echevarria’s 2016 Hyundai Accent.
Investigators believe Echevarria was trying to turn left when his vehicle was struck.
Immediately, responders took Echevarria to Spring Valley Hospital. However, he died while being transferred to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center due to multiple blunt force injuries.
The coroner’s office ruled his death was accidental.
On the other hand, rescuers took Collins to University Medical Center with survivable injuries.
Collins is a star basketball player at Bishop Gorman High School. Also, he is the top recruit of this year’s UNLV class.
The authorities arrested him on suspicion of a DUI crash that killed one man.
“A jar containing a green leafy substance was visible lying on the floor of the Dodge’s front passenger section,” according to an arrest report from the Metropolitan Police Department.
Additionally, investigators believe Collins was driving 88 mph in a 35 mph zone before striking Echevarria’s vehicle. The fatal incident happened exactly one mile from Collins’ home.
“It’s tragic,” said Rich Thornton, the assistant director of Vegas Elite Basketball Club, where Collins played. “First and foremost, for the victim and their family. And then it’s tragic for Zaon Collins and his family. It’s a horrible accident.”
