Emma Willmer-Shiles Dead in Half Moon Bay Plane Accident near Moss Beach Distillery
HALF MOON BAY, CA (January 16, 2024) – Monday morning, Emma Willmer-Shiles, 27, died following a devastating small plane crash near Moss Beach Distillery.
A person’s body was found in the water, close to where a small plane crashed near Half Moon Bay on Sunday night, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. The crashed plane was a single-engine Cozy Mark IV, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that two people were on board.
The plane was flying strangely near Moss Beach before it crashed, as per the sheriff’s office. Pieces of the plane were later found in the ocean near the coastline.
While searching for survivors on Monday morning, a fishing boat discovered a woman’s body in the water. The woman’s identity is still unknown, but officials think she may be connected to the plane crash since she was found in the same area.
The United States Coast Guard decided to stop looking for survivors on Monday. Ian McGoohan from the Coast Guard expressed sympathy for the families involved and thanked everyone who helped in the search.
The crash happened around 7:04 p.m. near Moss Beach Distillery after the plane took off from Hayward Executive Airport and flew over San Francisco. According to FlightAware, the plane landed at Half Moon Bay Airport at 5:04 p.m. after leaving Hayward at 4:29 p.m. NTSB investigators say the crash occurred shortly after taking off from Half Moon Bay Airport.
The overturned plane belonged to Winged Wallabies, Inc., based in Oakland. It was a Cozy Mark IV, a homemade light aircraft using prefabricated metal parts. Different agencies, including the San Mateo Fire Department, San Mateo Police Department, and a California Highway Patrol Helicopter team, helped in the search.
The crash site is a few miles away from Half Moon Bay Airport at 9850 Cabrillo Hwy. The United States Coast Guard, California Highway Patrol, and fire crews responded to the crash on Sunday.
The two people in the plane were confirmed to be deceased. One of the victims was confirmed to be 27-year-old Emma Willmer-Shiles, of San Francisco.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NTSB are looking into the single-engine crash.
