One Dead and One Hospitalized in Head-On Collision near Walnut Boulevard

BRENTWOOD, CA (June 4, 2018) – A girl was killed Monday afternoon and one other was left injured after a fiery collision between a vehicle and a tow truck on Vasco Road. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office later identified the girl as 17-year-old Emily Alarcon-Reyes of East Palo Alto.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported at about 2:22 PM. A 2016 Jeep Compass, driven by an unidentified 20-year-old San Francisco man, was heading north on Vasco Road. He attempted to pass vehicles in his lane by crossing the yellow line, resulting in a head-on collision with a southbound tow truck.

The impact of the collision catapulted the Jeep off the road and into a grass field where it became engulfed in flames. The tow truck remained at the scene after it became disabled and blocked the entire road.

Alarcon-Reyes was airlifted to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:37 PM. A 21-year-old passenger sitting in the back of the Jeep was airlifted to Eden Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. The driver of the tow truck complained of pains but did not sustain significant injuries and was not hospitalized. There were no reports on the condition of the Jeep driver.

Vasco Road, between Walnut Boulevard and Camino Diablo, was temporarily shut down for more than an hour. At the same time, the California Department of Forestry, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and East Contra Costa Fire Protection districts arrived at the scene to put out the fire caused by the crash.
