31-Year-Old Woman Arrested after Fatal Bicycle Accident on Highway 111
EL CENTRO, CA (September 29, 2019) – Authorities identified 44-year-old Emeterio Millan of Mexicali as the cyclist struck and killed by a car on Highway 111, Sunday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 7:30 AM. The victim, along with three other cyclists, was traveling northbound along the highway’s shoulder lane. There, a vehicle that swerved off the road crashed into the cyclists.
Millan died at the scene after suffering critical injuries. Meanwhile, emergency responders airlifted a female cyclist to a hospital in Palm Springs with major injuries. In addition, two other cyclists sustained minor injuries in the collision. However, it is unknown whether or not they required hospitalization.
The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old El Centro woman, fled the area after the collision. Authorities were able to locate the suspect and arrest her on suspicion of hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. Currently, she is in custody at the Imperial County Jail and is being held on a $150,000 bond.
The CHP continues to investigate the fatal crash. They encourage witnesses to cooperate as soon as possible. Investigators will release additional information once it becomes available.
