Francisco Gonzalez Mejia Arrested after Hit-and-Run DUI Collision near Airport Boulevard
SANTA ROSA, CA (June 16, 2018) – Two people were seriously injured late Saturday evening and a man was arrested, following a crash between two vehicles. 46-year-old Elvis Veliz and 47-year-old Lourdes Marcelo, both residents of Rohnert, were identified as the injured victims in this incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, they arrived at the scene at 11:50 PM on the northbound US Highway 101, near Airport Boulevard.
A black Mercedes and Toyota Corolla were found damaged following a violent collision between the two vehicles.
Officers found Veliz inside the Corolla, while Marcelo was found nearby after she was ejected from the vehicle. Both of them sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment and evaluation. The driver of the Mercedes, 20-year-old Francisco Gonzalez Mejia of Petaluma, fled the scene on foot, according to witnesses.
Mejia was later spotted by officers on Fulton Road after they noticed that he sustained injuries consistent with the collision. He was brought back to the scene, where witnesses identified him as the driver who fled.
The investigators allegedly saw signs of intoxication on Mejia, and he was evaluated for suspected DUI, which ultimately led to his arrest. After receiving treatment for his injuries, he was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries, hit-and-run, and violating his probation.
