Ellen Bonebrake and Another Woman Injured after Crash on Portola Way [Whatcom County, WA]

2 Injured in Whatcom County DUI Accident on Portola Way

 
WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (September 9, 2020) – Sunday night, Ellen Bonebrake and another woman suffered injuries in a crash on Portola Way.
 
The incident happened around 7:29 p.m. near Portal Way and Birch Bay Lynden Road intersection. According to reports, 80-year-old Ellen M. Bonebrake sustained a broken back and will possibly face vehicular assault charges.
 
Bonebrake drove a 2014 Cadillac XTS northbound in the southbound lanes on Portal Way from Birch Bay Lynden Road. Then, she crashed with a gray 2010 BMW X3 head-on.
 
As a result, Bonebrake sustained a broken back, Trooper Rocky Oliphant revealed.
 
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Bellingham female driver of the BMW was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham with injuries. Oliphant revealed that the Bellingham woman sustained a broken ankle.
 
On the other hand, two 6- and 9-year-old boys inside the BMW didn’t suffer injuries in the crash.
 
At this time, the State Patrol believes that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. However, the authorities haven’t arrested Bonebrake for suspected vehicular assault because she’s still admitted in the hospital.
 
The crash led to the closure of the roadway for around an hour during the investigation.
