72-Year-Old Pedestrian Dies after Train Collision in Novato
NOVATO, CA (August 13, 2018) – A woman was killed early Monday morning, after she was struck by a SMART train near North Hamilton Parkway.
According to Novato Police officials, the incident happened shortly before 6:00 AM. A 72-year-old woman was seen crawling on the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit tracks before she was hit by the southbound commuter train.
SMART staff members rendered first aid treatment to the victim while responding officers helped provide CPR. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld, pending contact with her next of kin.
Witnesses claimed that the woman did not leave the tracks despite multiple attempts by a SMART conductor to catch her attention. Initially, investigators believed that the victim had the intent to commit suicide. However, an investigation is ongoing to verify these claims and to identify possible contributing factors.
