MERCED COUNTY, CA (October 11, 2021) – Early Sunday, a driver died in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 99 and Shanks Road.
 
The authorities responded to the scene at around 1:25 a.m. According to a report, a vehicle hit an unknown object on northbound Highway 99, north of Shanks Road.
 
Upon the officers’ arrival, they found a man down in the No. 1 northbound lane. Then, the authorities declared him dead at the scene.
 
Furthermore, officers found four vehicles stopped just north of the scene. They also spotted a 2012 Dodge Ram in the median on its wheels after it rolled over.
 
The investigation revealed that the Dodge driver drove south on Highway 99, south of Bradbury. He traveled at an unknown speed without wearing a seat belt or other restraint.
 
Afterward, the vehicle veered into the median, went across it, and struck a so-called “k-rail,” which was bordering the northbound No. 1 lane.
 
As a result, the impact ejected the Dodge driver from the vehicle and landed on Highway 99.
 
Then, four other vehicles driving north hit the man. All the drivers stopped and contacted 911.
 
Moreover, the authorities confirmed that the drivers were cooperative with the investigation. Also, the police do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the involved drivers.
 
The northbound lanes of Highway 99 remained closed from 1:300 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
 
Also, the authorities continue to investigate the crash. At this time, it’s still unclear whether the Dodge driver was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
 
Furthermore, the Merced-area CHP office urged anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Bautista at 209-356-6600.
