Driver Killed, Amilcar Alvarez and Two Others Injured in Crash on Highway 101 [Willits, CA]

Chevrolet Driver Dies, Amilcar Alvarez Hospitalized in Willits Car Accident

 
Willits, CA (October 16, 2020) – On October 14, a driver died, while 29-year-old Amilcar Alvarez of Covelo and two other people were injured in a crash on Highway 101.
 
California Highway Patrol said the tragic crash occurred at around 5:43 p.m. near the Willits bypass.
 
The CHP said a 40-year-old man from Santa Rosa was driving a 2004 Chevrolet pickup northbound on Highway 101. He crossed over the double yellow lines to pass a Kenworth semi-truck.
 
Moreover, the CHP report states, “The impact of the collision forced the Chevrolet back into the northbound lane [where it] was then struck by the Kenworth.”
 
Then, the Chevrolet crashed head-on with a southbound 2012 Toyota driven by Alvarez.
 
The California Highway Patrol said the Chevy driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.
 

Highway 101 Crash Injuries

 
Meanwhile, the rescuers rushed Alvarez, who was driving the Toyota, to Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits. Later, the medical staff flew him to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
 
Subsequently, authorities also flew Alvarez’s passengers, 32-year-old Karin Gonzalez of Covelo and an 8-year-old girl also of Covelo,  to Howard Memorial also at first. However, rescuers took the child to Oakland Children’s Hospital via helicopter.
 
The Kenworth driver, 37-year-old Jesus Diaz Velasquez of Fortuna did not sustain injuries from the crash.
 
Furthermore, CHP said occupants of Toyota and Kenworth were wearing their seatbelts.
 
“It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this collision” which is still under investigation, the CHP report states.
