Driver Hospitalized after Fiery Crash Involving 2 Big-Rigs on Highway 101 Near Jonata Road [Buellton, CA]

Crash on Highway 101 Near Jonata Road Leads to Brush Fire and Seriously Injures 1 Driver

Buellton, CA (August 7, 2021) – A two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Jonata Road caused a brush fire and left a driver seriously injured on Friday afternoon. 

The incident happened on August 6 on southbound Highway 101 near Jonata Road at about 2:45 p.m. 

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision involved two big rigs however, the cause of the incident is still unclear. 

The driver of the semi identified as a 63-year-old man from Port Hueneme rear-ended another big rig. Then, the semi drove off the west side of the roadway before it caught fire. According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the semi spread the flames to the brush which eventually burned a 50-by-50 foot area of vegetation. 

The driver of the semi was able to escape his burning vehicle and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.

AMR ambulance transported the injured driver to Marian Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. However, there has been no update regarding his current condition. 

Fiery Collision in Buellton

Meanwhile, the driver of the second vehicle identified as Paul Michael Davis, 31, of Alta Loma was not injured. 

Furthermore, the crash prompted the closure of one lane of Highway 101 for preliminary duties. The road has since been reopened. 

Moreover, CHP is still investigating the incident and they said it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
