Elderly Columbus Woman Dead and 2 Others Injured after Hot Air Balloon Accident near Highway 24

LAKE GEORGE, CA (August 4, 2018) – An elderly woman was killed Friday morning after a hot air balloon had a hard landing on High Chaparral Road. The coroner’s office later identified the deceased victim as 73-year-old Dana Haskell of Columbus, Nebraska.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, a Cameron A-250 hot air balloon lost control and had a hard landing near Highway 24, around 10:30 AM.

The balloon portion of the aircraft reportedly collapsed while it was coming down after being in the air for about one hour. A total of nine passengers were on board the aircraft, including Haskell. She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Penrose Hospital by Flight for Life. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced dead by medical staff. Two others were injured in the incident, but it is unclear whether or not they were hospitalized.

The case remains under investigation by the authorities at this time, and no additional information has been released to the public.

Heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Dana Haskell. Wishing the bereaved loved ones strength and support during this very difficult and devastating time. May she rest in peace.
