Injuries Reported in Stanislaus County Plane Accident near Modesto Airport
STANISLAUS COUNTY, CA (June 3, 2024) – Sunday afternoon, a crippling small plane crash near Modesto Airport injured 2 people.
The crash happened at around 12:44 p.m. just east of the Modesto Airport on Sunday afternoon.
An airport personnel notified Stanislaus Regional 911 of an aircraft crash, according to Sgt. Luke Schwartz of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. Before this, dispatch scanner traffic indicated that the pilot had communicated being low on fuel and was planning to land in a field.
The field was reportedly located in the area of South Santa Fe Avenue and South Avenue in Empire. Following the crash, another aircraft bound for the airport spotted the crash site and relayed information to the airport tower until fire and medical responders arrived, Schwartz stated.
The aircraft involved was a North American T-6, a single-engine plane historically used to train U.S. and British pilots during World War II and into the 1970s. According to the National Museum of World War II Aviation, it remains a popular warbird for airshow demonstrations and static displays.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found both occupants — one male and one female — standing near the plane. Reports confirmed that the cause of the crash is currently unknown and under investigation. The names of the individuals on board have not been released.
