Wind Caused Richmond Auto Accident on Interstate 580 and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge

RICHMOND, CA (March 15, 2023) – Tuesday afternoon, a big rig crash on Interstate 580 and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge led to injuries.

The San Rafael Police Department released a statement reporting that strong winds had caused multiple big rigs to crash.

Moreover, the crash included an overturned Walmart truck on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, resulting in injuries and road closures.

As of 5:25 p.m., the California Highway Patrol Marin confirmed the reopening of the eastbound lanes for regular traffic.

However, the overturned trucks had yet to be removed from the eastbound side of Interstate 580, which runs through the bridge, causing its closure until the wind subsided.

Drivers were advised to take alternative routes, such as State Route 37 or the Bay Bridge, as Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at Anderson Street experienced rerouted traffic. Furthermore, CHP reported that the Main Street entrance to I-580 eastbound was closed.

Heavy traffic after the accident resulted in delays for units with the California Highway Patrol to reach the scene. Meanwhile, crews were observed in photos using chains to hook up the overturned Walmart big rig and prepare to right it.

Earlier that afternoon, CHP had warned drivers of high-profile vehicles about a wind advisory for the bridge and advised them to avoid taking such vehicles onto the bridge.
