1 Dead in Houston Auto Accident on Interstate 45 near Veteran’s Memorial Drive

HOUSTON, TX (March 14, 2023) – Sunday night, a 1-year-old girl died in a rollover crash on Interstate 45 near Veteran’s Memorial Drive.

The incident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-45 near Veteran’s Memorial Drive.

According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), seven people occupied the vehicle at the time of the crash. Moreover, the occupants included four siblings who were all children, two adult passengers, and the adult driver.

The Honda crossover, in which they were traveling, lost control and collided with the sidewall of the freeway. Afterward, it flipped over multiple times.

Also, the crash resulted in the ejection of two of the children and one adult from the car, leaving them with critical injuries.

Sadly, the 1-year-old girl died in the crash. Moreover, a 3-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man are also in critical condition. Meanwhile, a 10-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy suffered minor injuries.

The driver and the children’s mother, aged 33 and 31 respectively, were not injured.

The North Freeway remained closed for several hours overnight as crews worked to clear the crash site. Moreover, the HPD is currently investigating the exact cause of the crash, including whether or not the driver was intoxicated.

Officers confirmed that they detained the driver at the scene and subjected him to a field sobriety test. However, investigators did not disclose whether or not the driver was intoxicated or whether charges would be filed.

Reports also confirmed that none of the children in the vehicle were properly restrained. They also found only one car seat found inside the car, which was located in the trunk.

The investigation is ongoing, and the HPD has dispatched a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) unit to conduct field sobriety tests and investigate all angles of the incident.
