Officer Dead in Cottonwood Motorcycle Accident near Highway 89A
COTTONWOOD, AZ (September 9, 2020) – Monday afternoon, Cottonwood Police Commander Jody Makuch died in a crash near Highway 89A.
The incident occurred around 2:39 p.m. when 49-year-old off-duty officer Jody Makuch rode his motorcycle. Meanwhile, an SUV veered left of center and hit him head-on near Highway 89A and Willard Street.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety revealed that responders transported Makuch to a hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, authorities arrested the 41-year-old SUV driver, Jason Engel. He was booked into jail on multiple charges, including manslaughter.
DPS revealed that impairment played a role in the fatal crash.
