1 Skier Dead, 1 Seriously Injured after Avalanche at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort

ALPINE MEADOWS, CA (January 17, 2020) – A man was killed and another skier was seriously injured in an avalanche Friday morning.

The avalanche happened around 10:15 a.m., near the black diamond Subway Cirque run at Alpine Meadows ski resort.

Members of the Alpine Meadows Ski Patrol responded immediately, but the radio call was not in time to save the victim who died on the mountain.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as 34-year-old Cole Comstock from Blairsden in Plumas County.

A second male skier suffered serious lower-body injuries and was hospitalized. Officials said he is undergoing surgery at a Lake Tahoe hospital.

Witnesses saw no other individuals involved and no additional individuals have been reported missing. The search was declared complete at 11:45 a.m.

A Gofundme page has been set up for the Comstock family.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows’ operations team had closed Alpine Meadows Road early Friday morning for avalanche control. It later reopened just before 8:00 a.m.

The cause of the avalanche is still under investigation.
