1 Dead in Monterey County Auto Accident near Highway 1 and State Highway 68

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (May 7, 2023) – Early Saturday morning, authorities arrested Chris Witherspoon after a tragic DUI crash near Highway and State Highway 68.

The incident happened at around 3:45 a.m. near Highway 1 and State Highway 68.

When the CHP arrived, they confirmed that a 69-year-old man died in the crash.

Reports said that a Toyota Camry headed north in the southbound lanes on State Route 1. Then, it collided with the front of a Mitsubishi. As a result, the 69-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi succumbed to injuries at the scene.

Meanwhile, the authorities suspect drugs and/or alcohol as a factor in the crash. Moreover, 25-year-old Toyota driver Witherspoon of Hope Mills was taken into custody. Officers took him to Monterey County Jail.

Moreover, the crash temporarily closed the freeway while CHP investigated the crash. Traffic remained stalled in the area until 5:30 a.m.
