Ricardo Hernandez and Maria Guzman Arrested in DUI Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101
MENLO PARK, CA (August 11, 2019) – Two people sustained serious injuries following a double DUI crash involving five vehicles early Sunday morning in Menlo Park.
The CHP received a call about the crash around 2:35 p.m., which happened on northbound Highway 101 just north of Marsh Road.
According to the CHP, a 20-year-old Ricardo Hernandez of Redwood City was driving a gray Honda Civic when he lost control. He veered left into water-filled attenuators within the center divider and allowed the car to roll over on the highway.
Hernandez and three passengers got out of the car just before it was hit by a white 2018 BMW.
A white Honda Civic stopped before hitting the first two cars, but was rear-ended by a 2014 Jeep driven by Maria Guzman, 18, of East Palo Alto. That Honda managed to drive away, exiting at Woodside Road to wait for officers.
A red Dodge Dart then struck the Jeep shortly afterward.
Two of the three passengers in the gray Honda, a man and woman, were both seriously injured. The woman, a 19-year-old Chelsea Ochoa of San Jose, suffered major head injuries. In addition, 21-year-old Angelo Clavel of Redwood City sustained moderate head and leg injuries.
Paramedics sent the patients to Stanford Hospital in unknown conditions.
Officers determined that Hernandez and Guzman were driving under the influence. Both were arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail.
