Charles McMillan Dies, Woman Hospitalized After 2-Vehicle Crash on Main Hill in Los Alamos
Los Alamos, NM (September 8, 2024) – Charles McMillan, a former top official in U.S. nuclear weapons research, passed away at 69 following injuries from a two-vehicle crash in New Mexico.
McMillan, an experimental physicist, worked for nearly 23 years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and spent about 18 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he served as director for six years before retiring in 2017.
He died in a hospital after the crash, which happened early Friday on Main Hill, near Los Alamos.
Lab Director Thom Mason expressed condolences to McMillan’s family and former colleagues, noting McMillan’s significant contributions to science and technology.
Michael Drake, president of the University of California system, praised McMillan as a visionary leader and scientist, acknowledging his impact on national security and the scientific community.
During his tenure at Los Alamos, McMillan oversaw both expansion and challenges, including safety issues, such as a 2014 radiation leak at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.
He contributed to HIV vaccine development and advanced climate change modeling. McMillan’s work on supercomputing and artificial intelligence was also highly regarded.
Los Alamos police and fire officials confirmed that three people were treated for injuries from the crash, with McMillan and a 22-year-old woman being hospitalized.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
