Correctional Sergeant Dies after Crash with Pickup Truck in French Camp
[FRENCH CAMP, CA (January 12, 2020) – A corrections officer was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in San Joaquin County.
The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on Matthews Road, just east of Michael Canlis Boulevard.
Sgt. Cesar Fuentes, 32, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Mathews Road when he approached a pickup truck that was stopped on the south shoulder. The pickup driver suddenly pulled out in front of Fuentes to make an illegal U-turn, resulting in the collision.
After the impact, Fuentes was able to get to his feet. Paramedics rushed him to San Joaquin General Hospital less than a mile away where he later died, according to officials.
The pickup driver, 60-year-old Roger DeLaCruz, was not injured.
Fuentes had just finished his shift at the San Joaquin County Jail and was leaving when the crash happened.
He was a six-year veteran at the sheriff’s office had recently been promoted to the rank of correctional sergeant. He also served three tours of duty with the US Marine Corps.
Investigation into this fatal crash is ongoing.
