1 Dead and 2 Injured in Elko Car Crash
ELKO, NV (October 21, 2019) – A male Nevada resident died and two Montana residents suffered injuries in a head-on crash on 80 Freeway.
The incident on October 18 occurred in the westbound fast lane at around 3:15 a.m., Trooper Jim Stewart of the Nevada Highway Patrol revealed.
According to Stewart, the Nevada driver traveled east in the westbound lane in a Ford Focus he didn’t own. The car then crashed with a westbound SUV, just west of the Eureka Highway turnoff.
“He had to have been wrong-way from quite a while,” Stewart added.
Authorities pronounced the Ford driver, identified as 27-year-old Casio L. Withers of Battle Mountain, dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, responders airlifted the SUV driver to a hospital in Reno. The female passenger went to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko. However, she was later flown to Reno as well. Their identities remain unreleased as of this time.
“Alcohol was most likely a contributing factor to this fatal crash,” Eureka County Sheriff Jesse Watts stated.
The collision reduced the westbound traffic to one lane.
