Carol Sanchez Killed, Mirelez Alyssa and Xiong Mai Involved in Pedestrian Collision on Highway 99 Near Franklin Road

 
MERCED, CA (March 25, 2019) – An alleged DUI driver fleeing from a police officer died when a car struck her on Highway 99 near Franklin Road Wednesday night.
 
According to news reports, a police officer pulled over Carol Sanchez, of Merced, around 8:40 p.m. on suspicion of DUI. The officer immediately smelled alcohol and radioed an additional officer soon after.
 
However, as the officer tried calling for help, the woman ran across the northbound lanes, galvanizing the officer to pursue her on foot. As soon as she got to the southbound lanes she ran toward the northbound lanes where a Honda struck her.
 
Another Honda subsequently struck the first one, but neither driver suffered any injuries. Reports did not specify whether the involved drivers – 22-year-old Mirelez Alyssa, the driver of the first Honda, and 25-year-old Xiong Mai, the driver of the second Honda – were cited.
 
Sanchez, however, died at the scene. Per court records, the alleged DUI driver held a drunk driving record and other charges including hit-and-run.
