CHP Officer and Two Others Injured in Traffic Collision near Camarillo Springs Road Exit
CAMARILLO, CA (May 10, 2018) – On Thursday night, three people, were hospitalized following an intentional hit-and-run collision along the 101 Freeway. The driver responsible for the series of events was identified as 18-year-old Carlos Lozano of Camarillo.
According to the authorities, the multi-vehicle collision started just before 7 PM in the 700 block of Paseo Camarillo.
Following a fight with his parents, Lozano took control of his mother’s beige Nissan Pathfinder that was parked in the carport of their apartment complex. After striking two vehicles parked nearby, he returned to the parking lot in an alleged attempt to run over his parents. His father grabbed his mother in time to dive out of the Pathfinder’s direction and avoided getting hit. Lozano struck more parked vehicles before heading to the highway.
While traveling along the 101 Freeway, Lozano deliberately struck a vehicle near Carmen Drive and another one near Pleasant Valley Road. There were more reports of vehicles struck by the 18-year-old including at least four in Camarillo, two in Camarillo Springs Road, and one on the Conejo Grade.
A CHP officer who tried to help a citizen in need also became a victim to the string of collisions. His vehicle was behind a car that had run out of gas when the Pathfinder struck him. The impact pushed the white CHP vehicle against the disabled SUV and resulted in a significant damage to its front end.
A total of three people, including the CHP officer, reportedly sustained minor to moderate injuries. The injured officer was rushed to the Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, while the others were taken to local hospitals. There is no update on the current conditions of the injured victims. Their identities have not yet been released.
Lozano was arrested and could possibly face at least six accounts of assault with a deadly weapon using a vehicle, as per reports from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. No additional information about this case is available to the public at the time.
