Accident on Old Highway 395 Kills 13-Year-Old Boy in Rainbow

RAINBOW, CA (July 24, 2019) – A 13-year-old boy died when a SUV and a big rig collided Tuesday in an accident on Old Highway 395.

According to North County Fire Protection District Capt. Richard Berry, the 4:45 p.m. incident happened near Rainbow Valley Boulevard. Reports say a mother driving her two children collided with a semi-truck towing two rock hauler trailers. It appears the Honda Passport and the big rig entered the intersection at the same time.

As a result of the impact, the rig pushed the Honda to the right shoulder, where it struck an overhead light.

Due to the nature of the crash, a 13-year-old boy in the front seat died at the scene. The mother suffered major injuries and sought treatment at Palomar Hospital. Paramedics airlifted a 6-year-old girl in the backseat to Rady Children’s Hospital while the trucker suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s not positive at this time what caused the accident and where the fault lies. The crash did set a roadside vegetation fire about 30 by 40 feet, which firefighters quickly extinguished.

Police did not release any other information regarding the accident at this time.
