Multiple Passengers Hospitalized after Helicopter Performs Hard Landing in Remote Desert near San Diego
BORREGO SPRINGS, CA (April 30, 2018) – A helicopter crash near Borrego Springs Airport sent three people to the hospital, on Monday afternoon.
According to the authorities, the crash took place around 1:30 PM, roughly three miles east of the airport. The helicopter, a four-seat Robinson R-44, suddenly made a hard landing in a remote desert area in the far eastern reaches of San Diego.
The Federal Aviation Administration and sheriff’s officials searched the barren terrain by ground and air before finally locating the downed helicopter, which was determined to be operated by a helicopter charter and tour company called Big Blue Air from Palm Springs.
Four people were found inside the aircraft with minor injuries. According to Cal Fire, the victims were airlifted to a hospital around 4:30 PM, for treatment and evaluation.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will be handling the investigation of the helicopter crash. The cause for the crash was not yet confirmed, and the victims’ identities were not immediately available. No other additional information is available to the public at this time.
